Today, we talked more about laundry and even made homemade laundry detergent. That stuff works great and I love it! I figured our family can spend $10.00 on laundry detergent to last for several months!
Lydia demonstrated homemade cream of chicken soup, Holly made homemade chili, and Miss Rachael made her famous croutons!!! It all was delicious! I am so proud of the way these girls are demonstrating their recipes. We should have our own cooking show!!!! LOL
Homework: Those who did not send a recipe this week needs to bring a soup recipe to share with the class.
Memorize the 10 laundry tips at the bottom of this page.
Next week Mrs. Melanie will be demonstrating chicken noodle soup.
Katelyn will be demonstrating banana bread.
I need someone for the 25th to make something....anyone available???

10 Laundry Tips to Memorize
1. Check the tag
2. If it says “dry clean only”, get it dry cleaned
3. Separate colors
4. Use correct water temperature
5. Clean the lint screen after each use
6. Don’t overfill washer or dryer
7. Clothes fade and sometimes shrink when you dry them, so hang- dry expensive stuff.
8. Check pockets for items before washing
9. Place delicates in a mesh bag to wash and hang dry
10. Hang/fold clothes while they are still warm from the dryer to prevent wrinkles.
Recipe for Laundry Detergent
~Mrs. Melanie
1 Bar of Fels-Naptha Soap (you may also use Ivory Soap)
2 C Washing Soda (NOT baking soda)
2 C 20 Mule Team Borax
(optional) 50 drops of essential oil
Shred the bar of soap into 1 quart of water. Dissolve over low heat, about 30 minutes.
In a 3 gallon bucket, add 2 gallons of water, the washing soda, borax, and dissolved soap. Stir with a slotted spoon or whisk. It will get thick and gel-like.
You can stir in the essential oil if you want fragrance to your detergent (but make sure it’s essential oil and not just fragrance). Either put a lid on the bucket, or pour into other containers. Use as much of this as you would of any other detergent.
NOTE: The washing soda ($3.29) has 55 ounces (more than double than what you need), and the Borax ($3.00) has 76 ounces (also more than enough), and the Fels-Naptha was only $1.29 so this is very inexpensive, but superior to any store bought detergent.
You can actually make 2 batches for under $10.00
Cream of Chicken Soup
~Lydia Patton
Why buy when you can make? And make without all the fillers, MSG, and odd chemicals? Homemade tastes so much better and is a lot cheaper!
Campbell’s cost: $1 - $1.50
Homemade cost: 30 cents, give or take
Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 chicken bullion cube
¼ teaspoon pepper
Directions:
Combine in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir constantly. Boil and stir for 1 minute. Keep in mind that when you take it off the heat it will continue to thicken.
Croutons
~Rachael Patton
This recipe is easy and the measurements all depend on how many croutons you are making and what your taste buds like in a crouton! So, get to know the seasonings and what they taste like and don’t be afraid to play around with them.
Ingredients:
Bread
Canola or Vegetable oil
Garlic Salt
Basil Leaves
Italian Seasoning
Garlic Powder
Take your bread and slice it into the size you want your croutons to be.
Place them in a pan and pour oil over them to where they are visibly wet looking, but not to the point of looking soggy. (they will dry out some in the oven)
Put garlic salt, basil leaves, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder over the bread and thoroughly stir seasonings onto the croutons.
During this stirring time taste a piece to find out if you like the way it tastes. Add more seasonings if needed.
Put in the oven at 400* until toasted brown and crunchy. Keep in mind they will harden some when taken out of the oven so don’t over cook!
